18th INTERNATIONAL HEAT TRANSFER CONFERENCE

Rio de Janeiro

The main destination for international travelers is the Rio de Janeiro International Airport (GIG), named after Antonio Carlos Jobim – the great Bossa Nova composer and singer. Rio de Janeiro is served with everyday direct flights from many cities around the world and is a major hub for South America. The Santos Dumont Airport (SDU), conveniently located in downtown Rio de Janeiro, also offers local connections with national flights mainly from the city of São Paulo.

With stunning beaches, unforgettable landscapes and hospitable people (the Cariocas), Rio de Janeiro lives up to its nickname of Marvelous City, offering its visitors a delightful experience of charm and beauty. In addition to postcards recognized in the four corners of the planet, such as the Christ The Redeemer Statue and the Sugar Loaf hill, Rio de Janeiro has in its essence a busy life, where you can find excellent restaurants, bars, nightclubs, theaters, museums and much more. Rio de Janeiro has good weather, blue sky, sunshine and smiles on the faces of those who can enjoy this truly wonderful city.

One of the biggest economic and cultural centers of South America, Rio de Janeiro is located in the heart of the Brazilian Southeast Region, which concentrates 60% of Brazil’s GDP. A cosmopolitan metropole, known worldwide for its beauty and for its natural resources, Rio de Janeiro provides its residents and visitors a smooth and pleasant environment for leisure and work, which, combined with its infrastructure and its modern and diverse industry, makes the city an important center of commerce and services.

Rio de Janeiro occupies an area of 1,261 km2, with a population of about 6 million people. The city has as one of its greatest virtues, the warmth and hospitality that its people welcome visitors. With its ample infrastructure of tourist services, Rio de Janeiro is ranked among the top destinations in the world for cultural events and commercial, technical and scientific conferences and exhibitions. Its exuberant natural resources include 90 km of beaches and the Tijuca National Park, which is the largest urban forest in the world. Ipanema Beach has been selected in 2024 as the second best beach in the world by the Lonely Planet travel site. Internationally renowned by the Bossa Nova music Girl from Ipanema, Ipanema Beach is 3 km long, with crystalline waters and beautiful sunsets.

Insinuating and beautiful, the landscape of Rio de Janeiro has enchanted visitors for 5 centuries. A few years after the announcement of the discovery of the new land of Brazil, several of the natural hallmarks of Rio de Janeiro were already pictured in Italian, Dutch, English and, of course, Portuguese maps. By registering the huge bay that opened to the sea as the mouth of a river (rio means river in Portuguese), a Portuguese expedition sent to explore the Brazilian coast coined the name of the region.

Rio de Janeiro hosted seven games of the 2014 FIFA – World Cup, including the final, at Maracanã Stadium. Maracanã was originally built to serve as the venue for the 1950 World Cup. It was meant to become the largest football stadium in the world and it is estimated that more than 200,000 people witnessed the 1950 World Cup final game from the stands. When Brazil was awarded the 2014 World Cup in 2007, it was clear that Maracanã would host the final game and then went through a massive redevelopment. At the same time historic and modern, Maracanã now has a capacity of 79,000 seats.

Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2016 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Rio 2016 games provided the best possible environment for peak performances. Athletes enjoyed world-class facilities, including a superb village, all located in a compact layout for maximum convenience. The competition venues were clustered in four city districts: Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã – connected by a high-performance transport ring.

The Rio Games also celebrated and showcased sport thanks to the city’s stunning setting. At the same time, Rio 2016 was an opportunity to deliver the broader aspirations for the long-term future of the city, region and country – an opportunity to hasten the transformation of Rio de Janeiro into an even greater global city.

The G20 Leaders’ Summit is scheduled for November 2024 in Rio de Janeiro, with the presence of the leaders of the 19 member countries, plus the African Union and the European Union. The Group of Twenty (G20) is the main forum for international economic cooperation. It plays an important role in defining and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues.
